3.1.2 soundbars compared: Sharp HT-SBW53121 vs. Samsung QS700 vs. Sony HT-B600
All three of these are 3.1.2-channel soundbars with a wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos. On paper they look interchangeable. They aren't, and the differences that matter aren't the ones printed on the box.
This post explains what the channel numbers actually mean, how to match a bar to your room, whether a soundbar is any good for gaming, and how the three compare.
What the channel numbers mean
A soundbar's rating reads as three numbers — 3.1.2, 5.1.4, 2.1 — and each position means something different.
The first number is ear-level channels. A 2.0 bar has left and right. A 3.0 or 3.1 bar adds a dedicated centre channel, and that centre is where dialogue lives. If you have ever turned a film up to hear the talking and then been blown out of your seat by the next explosion, you were listening to a system without a proper centre channel. Going from 2.1 to 3.1 is the single biggest audible upgrade in this whole range of products, and it has nothing to do with Atmos.
The second number is subwoofers. A .1 means there is one. That is what produces the low end a slim bar physically cannot.
The third number is height channels. A .2 means two upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off your ceiling so it arrives from above. This is what makes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X do their thing — rain, helicopters and aircraft land above the screen instead of inside it.
More channels is not automatically better
This is the part the marketing leaves out. Every channel needs a driver and a share of the amplifier. A $500 bar advertising 5.1.4 is splitting the same modest power across nine outputs plus a sub. A $500 bar doing 3.1.2 puts more of it into fewer, larger drivers. The higher number can genuinely sound worse.
Channel count is worth paying for when you can also pay for the amplification behind it. Otherwise, fewer channels done properly wins.
Height channels depend on your ceiling
Upward-firing drivers work by reflection, which means they need a ceiling that reflects. Flat, solid, and roughly eight to ten feet up is ideal.
If your ceiling is vaulted, sloped, beamed, heavily textured, or higher than about twelve feet, the reflection scatters and you lose most of the height effect. In that case the money is better spent on a stronger 3.1 bar or a better subwoofer than on .2 you will never properly hear. No manufacturer will tell you this, but it is the single most common reason people find Atmos underwhelming at home.
How to choose for your room
Small rooms — bedroom, condo, under about 150 sq ft. A 2.1 or 3.1 bar is plenty. In a small space a large subwoofer is more likely to annoy the neighbours than impress you, and you will spend your life with the sub level turned down. Prioritise dialogue clarity and an adjustable sub.
Medium living rooms — roughly 150 to 300 sq ft, flat 8–9 ft ceiling. This is exactly where 3.1.2 belongs, and where all three bars here are aimed. Wide enough for the front stage to spread, low enough for the height reflection to work, small enough that virtual surround still convinces.
Large or open-plan rooms — 300 sq ft and up, or a room that runs into a kitchen. Virtual surround falls apart as the space grows, because the side-wall reflections it depends on are too far away or absent. Here you want physical rear speakers. A 3.1.2 bar that can add rears later is a better buy than a fancier bar that cannot.
Seating against the back wall. If your sofa is right against the wall, rear speakers end up too close to your head and the surround field collapses. Virtual processing often works better in this layout than real rears.
Wall-mounted TV versus a credenza. A bar sitting in a cabinet or below a wall-mounted TV fires into furniture. Check the height clearance under your TV before buying — these three range from 2.0 to 2.6 inches tall, and IR receivers can be blocked. The Samsung is the one bar here that detects its own orientation and re-optimises, which is genuinely useful if you plan to wall-mount flush.
Are soundbars any good for gaming?
Yes, with one caveat that trips up most buyers.
Connect the console to the TV, not the bar. Modern consoles output 4K at 120 Hz with variable refresh rate. Samsung publishes 4K video passthrough at 60 Hz on this model, and Sharp and Sony publish no passthrough figure at all — so routing a PS5 or Xbox Series X through any of these bars risks quietly capping your frame rate. Plug the console into the TV, and let the TV send audio back to the bar over HDMI eARC. You keep the full video signal and full-quality audio.
Make sure it is eARC, not just ARC. Plain ARC has enough bandwidth only for compressed audio. eARC carries the lossless and object-based formats that make Atmos in games worth having. All three bars here support eARC.
Height channels matter more in games than in films. Games place sound cues in three dimensions constantly — footsteps above you, a helicopter behind you — and the information is often tactically useful rather than merely atmospheric. A 3.1.2 bar earns its keep here.
Where the bars differ: Samsung has a Game Pro mode that switches automatically when it detects a console connected to a Samsung TV, and optimises further by game type through Samsung's Gaming Hub — both of which need a Samsung TV. Sharp's three HDMI inputs are the practical advantage if you want a console, a Blu-ray player and a streaming box connected to the bar rather than competing for TV ports. Sony offers no game-specific mode on this model.

Understanding power ratings: RMS vs peak
Wattage is the most misused number in audio, and soundbars are where it gets abused most. If you take one thing from this article, take this.
RMS is the honest number
RMS stands for root mean square. It describes the power an amplifier can deliver continuously, without distorting or overheating. It is the figure that corresponds to how a system actually behaves during a two-hour film.
Sharp rates the HT-SBW53121 at 182 W RMS total, 80 W of which is the subwoofer. That is a continuous rating.
Peak and PMPO are marketing numbers
Peak power is the momentary maximum a system can hit — for a fraction of a second, on a transient, before something gives. It is typically two to three times the RMS figure.
PMPO ("peak music power output") is worse still. There is no agreed standard behind it, and it can be inflated to ten times the real continuous output or more. If a product's headline figure is a startlingly large round number with no qualifier, this is usually why.
The practical rule: if a spec doesn't say RMS or continuous, don't assume it is. An unqualified "345 W" and a stated "182 W RMS" are not comparable, and the smaller honest number may well represent the more capable amplifier.
Here is that gap on a product in this very comparison. European retailers list the Sharp HT-SBW53121 as 550 W. We list the same bar as 182 W RMS. Both are Sharp's own figures — one is peak, one is continuous, and they describe the identical product. We quote the smaller number because it is the one that means something.
A third number that isn't power output at all
Samsung's spec sheet lists 38 W for the bar and 28 W for the subwoofer. That is power consumption — electricity drawn from the wall, which is what regulators require manufacturers to publish. It has no relationship to audio output. Nobody sensible would compare it to Sharp's 182 W, but it appears on the same page as the audio specs and it catches people out.
Why bigger watts matter less than you think
Even comparing two genuine RMS figures, the relationship between power and loudness is not intuitive.
Doubling amplifier power buys about 3 dB — a difference most listeners describe as slightly louder, not dramatically so. To sound twice as loud takes roughly ten times the power. So a 350 W system is not "twice as good" as a 175 W one; on paper it is about 3 dB of headroom.
Speaker sensitivity, driver size and cabinet design affect what you hear far more than the amplifier rating does. And in a normal living room, you will almost never drive a bar past a fraction of its rated output — the number matters mainly as headroom, so that peaks stay clean rather than because you will ever use it all.
What this means for these three
Only Sharp publishes a rated audio output. Samsung and Sony publish none for these models on their own sites — soundbar wattage is quoted so inconsistently that many brands have stopped bothering. You will find a 345 W figure for the Samsung on retailer listings, but Samsung itself does not publish it and the basis is unstated.
So treat 182 W RMS as information about the Sharp, not as a comparison. There is nothing here to compare it against on equal terms, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Where each one wins
The Sony HT-B600 is the pick for decoding and accessibility
At $799.99 it sits in the middle, and it has the most complete audio decoding of the three: the full DTS family including DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio, alongside the full Dolby set. If you own physical media, that matters.
Sold as the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6, it uses Sony's Vertical Surround Engine and S-Force PRO processing, plus an upmixer that pushes stereo content into the 3D field. X-Balanced rectangular drivers buy diaphragm area in a thin cabinet. At 37.5 inches it is the shortest bar here, which suits smaller TVs and tighter cabinets.
It is also, by some distance, the most thoughtfully designed for blind and low-vision users. Tactile dots on the back panel mark the eARC terminal so you can find it by touch. A raised square frame marks the QR code for the BRAVIA Connect app, which supports screen readers, so setup and remote operation can be done with VoiceOver or TalkBack narration rather than by memorising button layouts. Neither competitor here offers anything comparable, and if that applies to your household it should probably decide the purchase.
The Samsung QS700 is the pick if — and only if — you own a Samsung TV
Q-Symphony plays your TV's speakers alongside the bar instead of muting them. SpaceFit Sound Pro calibrates using the TV's microphone. Wireless Dolby Atmos sends audio over Wi-Fi with no HDMI cable at all. Game Pro switches automatically when a console is detected.
Every one of those requires a specific Samsung TV, and the compatibility windows are narrower than the marketing suggests: Q-Symphony needs a 2022–2025 Samsung set at BU8000 tier or above, SpaceFit Sound Pro needs certain 2021–2025 models at Q7 tier or above, and wireless Atmos needs a 2022–2025 Samsung TV. Without one, you are paying $899.99 for a 3.1.2 bar with its distinguishing features dormant.
It also has the richest streaming support of the three — AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Roon Ready, SmartThings — so it doubles as a music system more readily than the others. But note two omissions: no USB playback at all, and no DTS:X decoding. Samsung lists DTS Virtual:X as a sound mode, which is a virtualisation effect, not the ability to decode a DTS:X soundtrack. If your library includes DTS:X discs, this is the wrong bar.
At 45.7 inches it is also the widest here — right under a 65-inch TV, wrong under a 50-inch one.
The Sharp HT-SBW53121 is the pick for connectivity and expansion
Three HDMI inputs, against Samsung's one and Sony's none. This is the clearest hardware difference in the comparison. Samsung publishes one HDMI in and one out; Sony documents an eARC terminal for the TV connection. Sharp's three inputs, plus optical, analogue and USB playback, mean the bar can sit at the centre of a system rather than hanging off the end of one. If your TV is short on ports, this is the difference you will feel weekly.
A rear kit designed for it. Samsung sells the SWA-9500S for its bars and Sony offers nothing for this model, so Sharp isn't alone here — but the Sharp rears are the only ones in this comparison that add height channels at the back rather than just surround.
It publishes both Atmos and DTS:X, and a rated power figure, which the others do not. At $649.99 it is also the cheapest of the three — $150 below the Sony and $250 below the Samsung.
What you give up. The Sharp has Bluetooth 5.0 and nothing else wireless: no Wi-Fi, no app control, no AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect or Tidal Connect. If the bar needs to double as the household music system, the Samsung is in a different class and the Sony has app control the Sharp lacks. The Sharp is a television and film system with a Bluetooth fallback, and it should be bought as one.
So which should you buy?

- You have DTS:X or DTS-HD discs, or accessibility matters in your household → Sony HT-B600, $799.99
- You need multiple HDMI inputs, want DTS:X, or want the option of adding rears with height → Sharp HT-SBW53121, $649.99
The Sharp is the cheapest of the three and the most connected. The trade is that it is the least capable as a music system, and its distinguishing features are about how a home cinema is wired rather than how it sounds.
Adding rear speakers: the HT-SPR52021-BK
The Sharp HT-SPR52021-BK is a pair of wireless rear surround speakers built for the HT-SBW53121. They are $449.99.
Each rear carries its own upward-firing driver, so adding them doesn't just put sound behind you — it puts height information behind you too. A 3.1.2 bar becomes an effective 5.1.4 layout: three front channels, subwoofer, two rears, and four height channels front and back. That is a genuinely different listening experience, not an incremental one, and it is the layout Atmos was designed around.
They pair wirelessly to the bar, so each speaker needs only a power cable. They sit on a shelf or wall-mount, stand 9.4 inches tall, and draw 0.2 W or less on standby.
They are half of an award-winning system — but be precise about which one. The HT-SPR52021 rears, paired with Sharp's larger 5.1.2 bar the HT-SBW55121, won the EISA Soundbar System 2025-2026 award. Three things to be straight about.
They work only with Sharp Q-Series bars. There is no Bluetooth and no standalone mode — these are not general-purpose speakers, and they have no resale life outside the Sharp system.
They cost more than the gap to the Samsung. Bar plus rears is $1,099.98. If you are choosing purely on price today, the Samsung is cheaper than the Sharp system fully built out. The case for the Sharp path is that you can buy the bar now and the rears later.
And rears need somewhere to go. Each one needs a power outlet behind or beside your seating. In a rented apartment, or a room where the sofa floats in the middle, that is a real constraint worth checking before you commit to the upgrade path.
